Singapore is way too hot...=( Anyway, my travel log:
19/3:
The trains here are damn confusing. What's written on the boards does not match what the ticket people tell us. Am sorely regretting wearing a normal tank top and jeans under my jacket 'cause I'm freezing my butt off here. (But ice-cream is about the cheapest thing here at 0.5 Euro, so we're eating ice-cream. Everyone on the street is giving us funny looks.) Saw a plastic TRex statue in one park. Thought it was damn cheesy even though I figured out the building in front of it was a natural museum. It was under renovation but I saw what looked suspiciously like a statue of a hippocampus (a mer-horse). I saw this building in Frankfurt that made me want to sing praises of the Esplanade in front of it, with a microphone and powerpoint presentation. Did not take a picture of it because I was afraid my film would shrivel up in shame at having something so horrendously ugly emblazoned on it.
20/3:
The university students were having some sort of peaceful demonstration outside one of the government buildings this morning. It's very wintery and gloomy today, and even colder than yesterday. Went to Goslar, which is at the foot of the Harz Mountains, and it snowed a little. I like Goslar, it's very quaint...makes me feel like I went time-travelling back to the 17th century. Cobbled streets, gothic churches, the whole works. I wanted to climb up the Harz but my sister said I could go climb it on my own if I wanted to, and since I don't really fancy getting lost in a place where they don't speak English, I didn't. Goslar is nicknamed "witch village" 'cause they used to believe the witches gather there at night (It's the place that started Walpurgisnacht you see), and they still sell little witch figurines. Wanted to buy some back for you guys, but my sis said you'd all get freaked out 'cause they are really ugly little things. And in case you were wondering, there isn't a Leaky Cauldron there or whatever. But then again I couldn't really read the signboards 'cause they were mostly in German. (Although there was this weird guy who kept babbling in some version of German that my sister couldn't understand and kept shaking my hand. Weird.) There were more demonstrations this evening, and one guy jokingly shouted "Paparazzi!" at me when I took a picture of them.
21/3:
Very sunny today. Went up to Wilhelmshhe (another mountain) to see Schloss Herkules, the castle of Welhelm the Fourth. They light it up with greenish light in the evenings and from far it looks like some freakishly ugly party hat sitting on the mountain. There's also this really corny 8m tall statue of a butt-naked Hercules right on the top of the highest tower. It also has enormous forrested grounds and swans that tried to eat my shoes. I made my sister take the long way around and we ended up at another older castle called Lwenburg instead. It was all in ruins--almost half of it was gone, and the turrets and towers were all moss covered and crumbling. We did make it to Herkules at the end, but I still preferred the rundown little castle that we stumbled upon.
22/3:
More parks and castles today. We went to Karlsaue...a bright yellow building that used to be a summer palace or something. I must say they have a lot of space there for humongous parks that take whole days to walk through. Very peaceful life they have, just spend the weekend strolling about in the parks... just beware of the geese. Their park police ride horses, like in London. Very cool. They also had a greenhouse you could walk through, which even had orchids. There was this orchid named "King Arthur"... poor King Arthur, it was a rather ugly species, all green and blotchy. But it was also the biggest orchid there. After that we went to the airport...cute staff there who looked like Lex Luther from Smallville! =D
